Tucson, AZ – July 17, 2009 – Universal Avionics and its marketing alliance partner DAC International has been chosen to provide glass cockpit upgrades to a fleet of British Aerospace (BAe) ATP aircraft operated by West Atlantic. As the recently merged entity of West Air Sweden and Atlantic Airlines (based in the United Kingdom), West Atlantic currently operate 41 BAe ATP aircraft. The installation and certification, which will be completed by a partnership between West Atlantic and Scandinavian Avionics, will include a five-panel suite of Universal’s EFI-890R Flat Panel displays and Vision-1® Synthetic Vision System (SVS). Certification paperwork for EASA approval will be submitted by the end of this year with acceptance expected early 2010. The installation of the EFI-890R integrated displays will replace the aircraft’s existing EFIS system and support the display of critical Primary Flight Data in a larger, high-resolution format. The EFI-890R Navigation Display will support the high-resolution graphic output of the aircraft’s existing Universal Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS) and the new Vision-1® SVS. The upgrade will also feature an Engine Interface Unit and center engine display that will replace older electromechanical indicators. This integrated cockpit modification will significantly lower maintenance and repair costs for the operator while improving reliability. The EFI-890Rs in this installation will feature Universal’s new LED backlighting technology which is now standard in all Universal EFI-890R and EFI-640 flat panel displays. The Light-Emitting Diode (LED) backlight provides substantial improvement in fault tolerance and real world operation over fluorescence lamps. The technology offers superior efficiency that results in a 25% power reduction in the EFI-890R. The addition of the large format EFI-890R and Vision-1® SVS will significantly increase situational awareness for this aircraft. Universal’s Vision-1® features a unique egocentric and exocentric 3D view of the terrain ahead of the aircraft. Universal Avionics was the first avionics manufacturer to receive approval for installation of SVS in Part 25 aircraft such as the BAe ATP.
