  • RNP Save Story: Horizon Passengers Hit the Slopes

    Mar 21, 2017
    By: Stacy Honda, Marketing Manager
Less than 2 months after receiving approval from the FAA to begin using its proprietary Required Navigation Performance (RNP) instrument approach procedure at Friedman Airport near Sun Valley, Idaho, Horizon Air (a subsidiary of Alaska Airlines) was able to give its passengers what they wanted – an arrival just in time to get in a few runs on the slopes. This was achieved despite the snowy weather conditions. Geared up for ski season, Horizon Air is able to employ its RNP technology at 2 airports, Friedman Memorial at Sun Valley, Idaho and Mammoth Lakes, California. RNP enables certified aircraft and specially trained pilots to follow precise three-dimensional curved flight paths through difficult terrain using a combination of onboard navigation technology, Global Positioning System (GPS), and in Horizon Air’s case, Universal Avionics SBAS-FMS.

  • Comparing Mandates: RVSM in 2005 vs ADS-B in 2020

    Feb 21, 2017
    By: Stacy Honda, Marketing Manager
You may remember the Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) mandate in 2005 that affected approximately 6,500 corporate aircraft. This number was substantial and installation centers were booming, taking 36 months (24 months before/12 months after the mandate) to complete the upgrades in order to comply. After the mandate went into effect, many operators were forced to fly below FL290 until they were able to equip.

Insert Forecast Winds to Improve Fuel Calculation

    Feb 21, 2017
    By: Stacy Honda, Marketing Manager
Universal Avionics Flight Management Systems’ (FMS) Flight Plan (FPL) Menu Page 2 has an option to insert forecast flight plan winds adjacent to appropriate waypoints in the flight plan. This enhances overall time enroute and fuel consumption calculations, especially when the length of the leg being flown is near normal aircraft maximum range.
